There is a little research to be done and get the findings organized to choose the health insurance plan that is best for you.

There are two types of affordable care plans, namely the HMOs and PPOs.

HMO’s (Health Maintenance Organization) is an organization of healthcare providers (e.g. doctors and hospitals) that have contracted with an insurance company to offer their services at a fixed price.

HMO plans are normally quite restrictive and with lots of rules. You will be asked to select a primary care physician, who handles all aspects of your healthcare. The primary care physician must be a member of the HMO. The advantage is that HMOs are cheaper compared to other plans. Premiums are lower, copayments are normally low or free. Do remember, though, that HMOs are profit-based businesses, and must somehow make money. PPOs (Preferred Provider Organization)
PPOs also have contractual relationships with insurance companies. Difference is that they are more loosely organized and are not as restrictive as HMOs.

With a PPO, you can choose to see whichever doctor you like, but if the doctor is not in the network, you will have to pay more out-of-pocket. You don’t need a referral to see a specialist.

While PPOs are more costly compared to HMOs, many people tend to choose them as they are less restrictive and your healthcare decisions are more within your control.

So, how do you decide based on the difference between HMO and PPO?

You can cover preventive care and emergencies with HMO individual or family health care plans, which also provides long term protection for you and your family. What is really good is that it offers a lower premium and outside of catastrophic health plans, it is the most affordable plan. HMO also offers low deductibles, prescription drugs discount, and co pays on doctors.

Compared to HMO, PPO plans are a little more expensive, but it is still a more affordable option compared to fee for service plan. You can choose to lower monthly premiums by raising your deductibles.

HMOs are significantly cheaper, and limit the amount that you have to pay out-of-pocket. PPOs give your more flexibility and control.

A POINT OF SERVICE HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

Health Point Insurance

If you have been actively researching online for the perfect health insurance plan then chances are good that you have come across the term Point of Service or POS as it’s commonly abbreviated. This health plan is similar in many ways to a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) health care plan and a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) health care plan. For instance the PPO is not as restrictive as a traditional HMO and yet the over costs are cheaper when compared to a PPO, including the deductible portion of your health insurance bill.

Normally with a Point of Service health care plan the consumer will be asked to select a primary health care provider from a lists of preferred providers within the POS program. They will then receive all medical care from the doctor or medical specialist selected. Referrals to other specialty doctors and hospitals that are also part of the POS plan will originate and be directed by the primary health care provider. For instance the deductible is usually quite small and there is a minimal charge in the form of a co-payment for doctor visits and medical prescriptions.

Aside from having your primary health care provider refer you to specialists within the plan you also have the option to refer yourself to a specialist or doctor outside of the Point of Sale health care plan but keep in mind this will warrant additional costs (sometimes as much as 50% higher), which will need to be covered out of your own pocket. The one exception to this would be if you were in an emergency medical situation that required immediate medical assistance. If you’re truly looking for a health care plan that allows you to see your own doctor or health care provider then an indemnity plan is what you’re actually looking for instead of a POS plan.

Many folks like the flexibility and cost that a Point of Service health care plan offers.

HEALTH IN AMERICA

Almost fifty million American people are without health coverage (including almost nine million uninsured children), and the number rises every day.

The working class is especially hard-hit, seeing higher out-of-pocket costs for office visits and astronomical prices for prescriptions. This can lead to people delaying getting the health care that they need, or even declining coverage because it costs too much.

Healthcare costs are rising at a rate five times higher than that of inflation. And as we mentioned, employers are cutting costs by forcing their workers to pay more of their health care costs, in the form of higher copayments and deductibles.

Workers are also paying more for health care through rising costs for family plans, and decreased access to prescription drugs. Also, comprehensive coverage plans are prohibitively expensive for a lot of Americans.

The absence of quality health care in this country stems in part from the lack of quality assurance measures. Our public insurance program, Medicare, is increasingly strained at a time when millions of people are in need of a medical safety net. A majority of those 65 and older (over forty million people) rely on Medicare for their health care needs. Bush’s Medicare Bill also resulted in:

The federal government being prohibited from negotiating to get lower drug costs.

Employer-led prescription drug benefits for millions of retirees being threatened.

This country’s health care system is sorely lacking in safety protocols, which directly endangers hospital staff and patients.

Still others have health insurance, but coverage is being reduced and they have to pay much more out-of-pocket. For many people in this country, health care takes far too much out of their budget, and the need for true health care reform has never been greater. The economic security of millions of people depends on whether or not they have health insurance.
